A Comeback for Monty Brown??

Let's hope the rumors are true - former Ferris football All-America linebacker Monty Brown is talking about a comeback to the world of professional wrestling, where he was a rising star in the WWE through his alter-ego Marquis Cor Von. I even purchased his action figure at the local Meijer. He recently told a reporter for M-Live that he's negotiating with WWE for a return after taking a personal leave to help friends and family. Monty is also busy launching his own clothing line "Scripture Clothing."

Monty, the first Bulldog athlete in school history to be named both first-team All-America and first-team Academic All-America, was the leader of a football resurgence at Ferris during the 1990s. The linebacker went on to play for five years in the National Football League and was a member of two different Super Bowl teams. He's one of the great, generous people that make Ferris such a unique place. Look for Monty visiting with players and coaches on the sidelines at Ferris football games or hopefully on the TV screen soon. (contact Ted Halm, halmt@ferris.edu)

Grand Rapids Press Profiles Ferris Alum Paul Doyle

Check out a fantastic article published in Sunday's (March 29) edition of the Grand Rapids Press on Paul Doyle, a 1979 graduate of Ferris State University.

It's an outstanding story that chronicles Paul's experiences growing up in Brooklyn, N.Y., how he ended up attending college and playing basketball at Ferris, and how he transitioned into the business world as a successful professional in the Grand Rapids area.
Here is an excerpt from the story:

(Doyle) spent 29 years working in various careers in health care and now runs his consulting business, Paul T. Doyle and Associates, from his home in Caledonia.

He spends much of his work weeks traveling, working with such clients as Princeton University, Wisconsin School of Medicine in Milwaukee, Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine and a California health care system that operates 29 hospitals.

Business as usual for sixth-ranked Ferris softball team

BIG RAPIDS – In case you hadn’t heart, we have one of the best-kept secrets in all of NCAA Division II softball right here in our backyard.

Our Ferris State University softball team is ranked sixth in the nation and off to a 16-2 start following a sweep of archrival Grand Valley State University on Monday afternoon. The Bulldogs defeated the traditionally-strong Lakers 3-2 (in extra innings), in the first game, and finished the sweep with a 6-1 victory in game two. The game originally was scheduled to be played on Sunday, but was moved back to Monday in anticipation of inclement weather.

In talking with head coach Keri Becker following the game, she attributed her team’s strong start to two areas – beyond mere talent: (1) strong pitching and (2) good defense. Coach Becker has had few issues in either area and when the team has been hitting well it has been virtually unbeatable this season.

If you get a chance to watch the Bulldogs on the diamond this season it’s probably something you will not want to miss. The team is next scheduled to be at home on Saturday (April 4) when it hosts Lake Superior State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the FSU Softball Field.

Come out and support our nationally-ranked Bulldogs, the defending 2008 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region champions.
