River Bank Run Shirts Highlight Talents Of Ferris Graphic Design Students

The Fifth Third River Bank Run is one of the great traditions in the Grand Rapids area for its dedicated running community.

The annual event, which ran for the 33rd time on May 8, is quite the big deal in West Michigan and, once again, Ferris State University students have played a key role in the success of the River Bank Run.

A group of senior students in Ferris' Graphic Design program put their creative talents to work for the eighth straight year to work with, among other things, the design of the T-shirt.

Ferris students involved in the event included Jon Bergmann, 24, from Big Rapids; Jesse Cocking, 28, a native of Flint; Steven McMahon, 21, from Rockford; Alissa Rader, 21 of Bad Axe; and Rebecca Stream, 21, from Kent City. The group, which consisted of a few students from West Michigan, again created a design that gave River Bank Run officials and participants and individuals from Ferris to again flash smiles of satisfaction at the end product. Linda Powell and Alison Larabel, assistant professors at Ferris, helped guide the students in this endeavor.

“The Fifth Third River Bank Run project provides Ferris State University’s senior Graphic Design students with opportunities for practical design business experience, including project management, client interaction and pre-production practice,” Fifth Third Bank-West Michigan President John Bultema said. “In turn, the students provide the event with creative design applications that are utilized in advertising, collateral materials and race day T-shirts.”

Here is a shout out for the Ferris Graphic Design students in the Grand Rapids Press in a story written by Howie Beardsley in March:

The event also will again consist of pre-race day charity work, first-time community voting to decide the River Run T-shirt design by graphic design students at Ferris State and the 15-year anniversary of the Feelin' Good Mileage Club program.

It's great to once again see Ferris students showcasing their talents in a practical setting in which their works take on an even greater significance.
