Ferris State University's 125th Birthday Celebration and Community Dinner

BIG RAPIDS - Ferris State University President David L. Eisler and the 125th Celebration Committee cordially invite you to the 125th Birthday Celebration and Community Dinner on April 22, at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Center in Big Rapids. Past presidents of the University will be attending as special guests.

Tickets are $35 per person. The reception begins at 6 p.m. with dinner following at 7 p.m. Highlights will include unique entertainment and the chance to to have your coffee table book autographed by the past presidents.

BIG RAPIDS - Ferris State University’s history has been documented in a new coffee table book that will be released to the campus and local communities and the world on Sept. 1.

“Ferris State University: The First 125 Years” comprehensively chronicles the progression from Big Rapids Industrial School to Ferris Institute, to Ferris State College to what it is today: Ferris State University. The book is filled with photos that range from rare and historical to unique and modern. The images of Ferris State University are accompanied by the stories that have helped define the University during its first 125 years.

"Ferris State University is a remarkable feature in the varied and broad terrain of American higher education,” said Ferris State University President David L. Eisler in the foreword. “This book captures the heritage and vitality that makes Ferris an institution comfortable in its own skin and more ready than ever to transform lives."

The book takes the approach of telling Ferris State University’s history more from a storytelling standpoint than the typical historical perspective. Beginning with stories about the University’s founders (Woodbridge and Helen Ferris), the book takes readers through 125 years of history that includes tragedy of Old Main burning down, the rebirth of the campus beginning in the late 1950s, the modern era of campus development and the University’s continuing commitment to provide a quality and practical education.

While the book contains plenty of information known to many people who are familiar with the history of Ferris, it also contains interesting Ferris facts some people may not know about. The books will be available for purchase at the Barnes and Noble Lundberg Bookstore, on the Ferris campus; and other local businesses such as Great Lakes Book and Supply, the Old Pioneer Store and Emporium and the Ice Arena Pro Shop at a cost of $24.95. Dolores Huerta Inspires Students, Faculty And Staff At Ferris State University


BIG RAPIDS - From the beginning of Dolores Huerta's presentation at Ferris State University, "Without Fear: Neighbors Unite," it was clear that fire and passion for social justice still burn inside of her as intensely as ever.

Speaking to a crowd that included students, faculty, staff and community members in Ferris' G. Mennen Williams Auditorium, Huerta touched on a wide range of topics that traced back to her theme of social justice and community activism. Huerta, one of the legendary Chicano labor leaders in the United States and the first Latina inductee of the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993, discussed a number of issues, including: racism, sexism, homophobia, the economy, militia groups, unionization, health care, education, giving back to communities and more in her hour-plus presentation that included a question-and-answer session.

"The soul of our country is education. We've got to educate people to be tolerant, we've got to educate them about the contributions of labor, contributions of women and about the contributions of people of color," said Huerta, whose presentation was a part of Women's History Month activities at Ferris. "If not, we're going to continue this division and this racism we have in our society."

Working With Cesar Chavez

Huerta discussed her work with Cesar Chavez in co-founding the United Farm Workers (originally named the National Farm Workers Association) in 1966 when few people thought it could be done because, "they're poor, they don't have any assets, they don't have any money, they don't speak English and they're not citizens." Swelling with the pride of accomplishment, however, Huerta talked about how the efforts to unite the farm workers proved ultimately to be successful. Huerta and Chavez reminded the farm workers that they had more power than they realized.

"No one was going to make the changes for them," said Huerta, recipient of Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award from President Clinton in 1999. "They had to make the changes for themselves. They had to take responsibility and if they didn't take that responsibility then nothing was going to change."

Through organization efforts, motivated individuals marched, passed leaflets, registered people to vote, got people out to vote, went on strikes and boycotts.

The Power Of The Person

Huerta, who for more than 50 years has been a champion of social justice, talked about the power of the person and what one person can do.

"It's not enough to register to vote and it's not enough to just vote. We've got to take the next step, we've got to do advocacy and we've got to take action," she said. "Because, if we're going to get our democracy back we're going to have to do a lot more work.

"We're in a situation right now that in addition to the ongoing racism that we have we such an economic disparity. We have one percent of our population in the United States owns 90 percent of the wealth. There is something wrong with that picture," Huerta added. "Our minimum wage has not kept up with the cost of living."

Near the end of her presentation, she also talked about the Dolores Huerta Foundation which was created "to inspire and motivate people to organize sustainable communities to attain social justice with an emphasis on women and youth."

"A or F President Obama's Report Card" is an open forum discussion on Wednesday, April 7 at 6 p.m. in the Whitney Young (Rm.125/127) room in the Rankin Center.

Up 'til Dawn is a fund-raising and awareness program for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

St. Jude saves lives and finds cures for catastrophic children's diseases and cancers at no cost to families.

Since 1997, students at 375 college campuses have helped raise over $24.5 million for St. Jude.

Executive Director
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall management of the program and serves as the liaison between the Executive Board and ALSAC, the community and campus. The Executive Directors sets the tone and direction for the entire Up ‘til Dawn program and must make sure all duties are being carried out to ensure a successful Up ‘til Dawn.

Assistant Director
The Assistant Director serves as the right hand of the Executive Director and helps assist with the overall management of the program. The Assistant Director also manages the upkeep of the Up ‘til Dawn headquarters.

Morale Chairperson
The Morale Chairperson is responsible for motivating the participants and Executive Board about Up ‘til Dawn. The Morale Chairperson oversees the morale captains, develops a spirit point system for teams, and creates activities to keep participants excited about Up ‘til Dawn.

Teams Chairperson
The Teams Chairperson is responsible for recruiting teams, communicating information to teams, and acts as the liaison between teams and the Executive Board.

Public Relations Chairperson
The Public Relations Chairperson is responsible for coordinating all publicity on campus and in the community.

Entertainment Chairperson
The Entertainment Chairperson is responsible for coordinating and booking all entertainment for all Up ‘til Dawn events.

Fund raising Chairperson
The Fund raising Chairperson is responsible for developing and implementing a fund raising strategy. This includes planning and implementing the letter writing campaign.

Sponsorship Chairperson
The Sponsorship Chairperson is responsible for soliciting corporate sponsorships, catering donations, monetary donations, door prizes and giveaways.

Advocacy Chairperson
The Advocacy Chairperson is responsible for educating the Executive Board and participants about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and providing service learning opportunities for participants.

Logistics Chairperson
The Logistics Chairperson is responsible for coordinating all logistics associated with any Up ‘til Dawn events (i.e. reserving locations, determining power and electrical needs, etc.).

Tips for Submitters

Download the MEC Logo
  • Make a sketch of your layout before placing your papers on the poster board.
  • Use photos, figures, and tables to tell the story of your topic.
  • Present information in a sequence that is easy to follow.
  • A poster board should not rely on verbal explanations.
  • Use active voice when writing the text.
  • Avoid overuse of color.
  • Edit. There is almost always too much text in a poster.
    - Good rule of thumb is about 25% text, about 45% graphics and about 30% empty space.
    - Consider using bulleted statements.

Competition Judging Guidelines

Content must include (80% of total points awarded):

  • Relevancy and quality of content
  • Heading which must include the author’s name and title
  • Brief abstract/introduction
  • Visual images to illustrate the topic
  • Citations
  • Conclusion
  • Mechanics (grammar, spelling, etc)

Design (20% of total points awarded):

  • Visually pleasing
  • Orderly
  • Creativity

Plagiarism will result in elimination from the competition.

The decisions of the judges of this competition shall be final.

Poster Board Design Requirements

  • Tri-fold, 36” H x 48” W, free standing poster board. A model with these dimensions may be seen in the IRC Connector.
  • The Michigan Energy Conference logo must be prominent on the poster board. The downloadable copy of the logo is linked on the left side of this page. www.ferris.edu/mec
  • Background can be any color.
  • The paper on the poster board should be organized so that it is clear, orderly, logical and self-explanatory.
  • The abstract / introduction must be in the upper left corner and the conclusion in the lower right corner.
  • The abstract / introduction must summarize the main content of the poster.
  • Lettering for titles must be readable from at least 6 feet away.
    o Title should be placed prominently at the top of the poster board.
  • Letters for text must be readable from at least 4 feet away.
    o Double space all text.
    o Use left justification.
  • Do not use abbreviations that are not known to all.
  • Words must run left to right.
  • The same typeface (e.g., Arial, Garamond, Lucida, Verdana, etc.) must be used throughout. Fonts (e.g., regular, bold, italic) may vary.
  • Construct easy-to-interpret graphs and tables for information and comparisons.
  • Colored paper may be used to frame printed sheets.
  • No computers will be allowed at your display.
  • No animation or moving parts permitted.

Guidelines & General Information

  • Poster board competition will be held April 7-8, 2010 at Ferris State University in conjunction with the Michigan Energy Conference.
  • Entry forms must be received by 5 p.m., March 10, 2010 in order to be considered.
  • There are three (3) groups this year:
    • Individual (from FSU)
    • Group (from FSU - not more than five members please)
    • High School students from the following schools: (Big Rapids, Crossroads, Reed City, Morley-Stanwood and Chippewa Hills).
  • Prizes to be awarded for Ferris students in each division, in each classification are as follows: 1st place $500, 2nd place $250, 3rd place $125, 4th place $75, and 5th place $50 (10 main prizes in all for Ferris students).
  • Prizes to be awarded for High School students are as follows: $100 plus a $1,000 scholarship for top three places and $50 plus $1,000 scholarship for 4 thru 6th place.
  • With submission of your entry form to the Michigan Energy Conference, you agree to deliver your poster board to the place, and on the day and time established by the Student-Faculty Promotional Committee.
    • University students must drop their poster boards off to Wink arena on April 6, 2010 between noon and 4 p.m.
    • High school students must drop their posters boards off during business hours (8:30 to 5 p.m.) to the Department of Public Safety (South Commons) to June Swanson by April 2, 2010. The Student-Faculty Promotional Committee will notify you of acceptance by email.
  • Poster boards must remain in place until notified by the committee.
  • Judging will take place after 4:00 p.m. on April 6, 2010 and the winners will be announced during the conference Guest Speaker presentation on Wednesday evening, April 7, 2010.
  • Students must be in attendance at the Wednesday evening event in order to be qualified for an award.
  • At the discretion of the poster committee, all awards may not be handed out. Posters that do not meet the criteria stated in the Poster Board Design Requirements will not be considered for an award.

Why: To encourage students to investigate energy issues and compete for cash prizes up to $500!

Who: Currently enrolled students at Ferris or high school students from Big Rapids, Crossroads, Reed City, Morley-Stanwood and Chippewa Hills are eligible to compete.

How: 1. Choose an energy topic that interests you.
2. Create a poster board about your topic.
3. Submit your poster board for judging.

When: Deadline for High School entries is March 10, 2010; poster boards must be completed and ready for display by April 2, 2010.

Deadline for University entries is April 6, 2010; poster boards must be completed and dropped off to WINK Arena between noon and 4 p.m. on April 6, 2010.

Content: A wide range of topics may be considered in alternative energy as it relates to:

  • Business/economics
  • Health
  • Education
  • Ethics
  • Emerging technology
  • Public policy (metering and efficiency)
  • Potential pollution

Get Set For the 2010 Mock Awards

BIG RAPIDS - Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated Zeta Beta Chapter and You Beautiful Black Woman are collaborating to present the 2010 Mock Awards.

Among the awards that will be handed out are Campus Flirt, Twitter of the Year, and Mr. and Mrs. FSU. Considering there are no shortage of people who like to flirt, are involved with Twitter or think of themselves as Mr. or Mrs. Ferris, there is likely to be no shortage of people in attendance in the Rankin Center Dome Room on Wednesday April 7. The evening promises to be a fun time for people who will get an up-close-and personal opportunity to see how they stack up against some of their peers here on campus at Ferris.

This event is free and all are invited to attend.
