Ferris State Torch Job Fair Friday, April 20

The Ferris State University Torch student newspaper is hosting a job fair from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, April 20 to fill open staff positions.

Students interested in joining the award-winning staff should attend the event in the Rankin Student Center, Room 140. Mary Benson, the 2012-13 editor-in-chief, created the fair to encourage student involvement with campus news.

“The job fair she is doing is really unique. It’s a great idea,” said Torch advisor and professor Steven Fox. “I have students who are interested and are going to ask about certain positions. She’s pretty innovative in that way and proactive to build a strong staff.”

Current staff members will be available to answer questions about open positions. Interested students should bring a resume and portfolio samples for on-the-spot interviews. No experience is required. The Torch is looking to fill positions including: writer/reporter; advertising representatives; photographer; copy editor; production assistant.

Benson, current production manager for the Torch, said working for the student newspaper gives employees hands-on experience and is a great resume builder. She enjoys the dynamics of working in groups to help the students become better reporters.

“I’m very excited for the new school year, possible changes and keeping the traditions,” Benson said.

Mechanical Engineering Technology Project Day Friday, April 20

The Ferris State University Mechanical Engineering Technology graduating students will present their capstone projects on Friday, April 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The presentations will take place in the Granger Center. The 22 graduating students will present their projects on topics ranging from suspension modification on an off-road vehicle to a video game enhancement requiring bicycle peddling and steering. All students will test their projects and explain their design.

Peppermint Twist Scholarship Ball April 20

The Ferris State University Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Zeta Rho Chapter is hosting their 6th annual Peppermint Twist Scholarship Ball on Friday, April 20.

It will be held in IRC 109 from 7 to 9 p.m. Two scholarships will be given out during the event to one individual, who has shown academic success and leadership on campus and one organization, who hosts an abundance of community service projects.

Keynote speaker Bonita Harvey, Ferris alumnus and a fine arts instructor of Grand Rapids, Mich., will be discussing how diversity affects college students.
