One of the great things about the 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration's annual Freedom March at Ferris State University is the way that the campus and local community in Big Rapids comes together.

The campus and community come together to celebrate the life and deeds of Dr. King and to do what is possible to help keep the "Dream" alive and continue to work toward Dr. King envisioned during his way-too-brief, but amazingly-important life.

As is always the case, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom March featured so many people from the community as well as faculty, staff, students and alumni. It's great to see that spirit. Hopefully that spirit remains strong or becomes stronger between the 2012 MLK Celebration and the 2012 MLK Celebration.

Each event reflects Dr. King’s work through efforts of making society better by educating, encouraging and engaging on issue of our time, and through service.

The 2012 MLK Celebration theme is “Carrying on the Dream.” The list of events below display how you can carry on his dream.

Please Note: The MLK Service Project is a collection of Non-perishable food items as well as other goods and items to benefit the Wise Shelter and Project Starburst. Ferris State University’s December 2011 Commencement

December Commencement is quickly approaching for Ferris State University’s graduating seniors, who will walk the stage on Saturday, Dec. 17.

December 2011 Commencement will be held in the Ewigleben Sports Complex for the two graduation ceremonies. The first ceremony will take place at 10a.m. (doors will open at 9a.m.). This ceremony will include the graduates of the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Services, and Engineering Technology. The second ceremony will take place at 1:30p.m. (doors will open at 12:30p.m.). The final ceremony will include graduates of the colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Business, and Professional and Technological Studies graduates from the Digital Animation and Game Design, Digital Media Software Engineering, and Industrial Technology and Management programs only. All other CPTS graduates will walk with their affiliated college.

Congratulations to the soon to be graduates of Ferris State University.

Reflections of Fall 2011

Another semester at Ferris State University has come to a close. We hope you have enjoyed it. Here is a look back on some fun times during the fall semester.

Ferris Unplugged: a bi-weekly concert held in Biggby Coffee on Thursdays by Music Industry Management students. Be sure to attend their events next semester as well.

Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant: an annual event hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Entertainment Unlimited campus events: A variety of events took place on campus such as: comedians, musicians, hypnotists, 5-star speakers and more. EU hosts multiple events every semester. Their first event in the new year is Jan. 12 with Breaksk8, a dance crew from America's Best Dance Crew.

Ferris State Hockey Games: with the home games full of student support the hockey team has a current record of 10-5-1. Be on the lookout for Brutus at other sporting events next year! The Three Musketeers Performance: The Ferris Theatre Department showed how the student performers were "All for one and one for all!" Be sure to audition for the spring show, Avenue Q, Jan. 23.

Yes, it's that time of the year when our hard-working Ferris State University students see the end of the semester coming up and their plans for winter break move into focus.

Before then, however, students need to finish up their studies for the semester and finish up strong with a great effort on their final exams.

With that in mind, student videographers Angie Walukonis and Byron Williams, who was a very special guest videographer for us while job shadowing, conducted campus interviews to ask students how preparation is going for finals.

Image Awards Voting Is Underway And Continues Until Dec. 19

Voting for Black Leaders Aspiring for Critical Knowledge's Image Awards is underway and continues until Monday, Dec. 19.

Image Awards is formal awards show that recognizes oustanding faculty, staff and students for their hard work and dedication on our campus.

Check the ballot and vote by the Dec. 19 deadline. The ballot can be found in the Org Sync Election Portal under 2012 Image Award Voting.

To find the ballot, in MyFSU, click on the OrgSync button (near email and FerrisConnect) and click Elections (left side of the screen under the Ferris picture). Click on forms and then 2012 Image Award Voting.

The show will take place Feb. 4 in the Williams Auditorium at 7 p.m. Be sure to save this date for an event you will not want to miss.

This event is funded by the Student Activity Fee as allocated by the Finance Division of Student Government.

Black Student Union, Ferris State Chapter presents: State of the Black Student

State of the Black Student is an event that is devoted to seeking change of issues that affect minority students on Ferris State University’s campus.

On Wednesday, Dec. 7, Black Student Union (BSU) is hosting this event in IRC 120 at 7 p.m.

This event will present a wide variety of topics that affect minority students such as their role at this university, how to make a difference on campus, decorum and much more.

“State of the Black Student is a discussion to address the issues that are effecting and preventing success amongst the minority students at Ferris State University. Being a minority on this campus, what affects one, affects all,” said Breanna Alexander, BSU president.

Some of the goals of BSU are to promote and encourage scholarship, professionalism, community service, and knowledge of current events which contribute to being a successful college student.

“This discussion will be a teaching and learning experience,” Alexander said.

Students are asked to attend the event with an open mind and a plan to make a change.

What Happened To My Refund?

The Ferris State University student organization Black Leaders Aspiring for Critical Knowledge (B.L.A.C.K.) is putting on what should be an informative event regarding finances for students.

The program is scheduled for the Monday right after Thanksgiving break, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. in IRC 120 on campus.

The event is designed to equip students with knowledge of alternative ways to spend their refund dollars and cents. The goal is to help students spend their refund checks in responsible ways.

This event is free and students are encouraged to attend.

The program features guest speakers from Huntington Bank, Delta Sigma Pi, the Finance Management Association and the Ferris Financial Aid Office.

Ferris Magazine Portrait: Jeff Burns, Recreation Leadership and Management

Hometown: Julian, Calif.

Why RLM?: I was at another school when I found out about the program through a friend who went to Ferris. He talked about the high ropes and all the other stuff they do. What’s unique about Ferris is its hands-on learning, and that’s what I’m all about. I don’t see myself sitting in a classroom or a cubicle. That’s just not my personality. I try to promote the program to all my Deaf friends.

On fieldwork: We went to Manistee State Park for a backpacking trip, which helped put classroom learning into practice. Also, on the trip the other students learned how to communicate with me. My interpreter was on the trail in front of me. She would interpret to me off to the side so I knew what people were talking about and did not feel left out.

On the importance of having an interpreter: It’s a necessity, like oxygen. The challenge is finding an interpreter who will spend the whole semester engaged with the material. My interpreter isn’t on auto-pilot, just signing what she hears. She’s really good at giving me information. It’s hard if you don’t have the funding or support for that.

Future plans: I’d really like to work for a high-adventure kind of camp, creating opportunities for people with disabilities. I have a dream to start a farm where kids can come and learn about responsibility, communication skills and self-esteem. Not a lot of kids, especially from the city, have ever seen a live chicken and experienced where things come from. From The President's Desk: Ferris Mourns The Death Of A Student

Here is a note to the campus community from the desk of Ferris State University President David L. Eisler regarding the death of Ferris student Demia Marie Davis on Monday, Nov. 14.

Last week Ferris was deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Demia Marie Davis, an 18-year-old student from Madison Heights. Our Department of Public Safety was dispatched to Clark Hall last Monday, Nov. 14, after Ms. Davis’ roommate found her unresponsive. Our Counseling Center has made its services available to students and others affected by this tragedy. I want to thank everyone who has helped our university community through this difficult period.

The sense of vitality and potential that our students bring to a college campus is one of the reasons why many of us choose to work in education. We are all saddened when a young person does not have the opportunity to realize that potential. I know that you join me in extending our deepest condolences to Ms. Davis’ family and friends.

S.T.A.R.S Student Leadership Conference

Ferris State University will be hosting the second annual Striving to Achieve Resident Success (S.T.A.R.S) leadership conference Saturday, Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The conference will take place in the Interdisciplinary Resource Center (IRC) and is open to any student wanting to develop their leadership skills, become a Resident Advisor or become a registered student organization president.

The conference will consist of programs and workshops including: resume help, interview techniques, diversity workshops and more.

Honors Variety Show

Ferris State University will host the Honors Variety Show on Thursday, Nov. 17 in the Rankin Student Center Dome Room.

The show will begin at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted and will be given to the Big Brother's Big Sister's of Mecosta County.

Honor students will perform numerous acts consisting of solos and groups singing, dancing and playing various instruments.

United Way Swim-a-thon Fundraiser

Ferris State University will be hosting a Swim-a-thon for a United Way fundraiser Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

The Swim-a-thon will take place at the Student Recreation Center Pool.

Students are still able to register at the Student Recreation Control Desk until the event begins. Those participating are encouraged to make a donation upon registering.

Pledges will also be accepted for teams participating in the event.

Here is a note to the campus community from the desk of Ferris State University President David L. Eisler regarding an upcoming budget forum that will be held on campus on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m.

This week I will hold a budget forum to provide an update on state and national issues that may impact on our finances. I am hopeful you will join me on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m., in the Rankin Centennial Room.

These past few years have been a time of unprecedented change in how and to what level Michigan funds higher education. This is the first of several sessions I will present this year as part of continuing conversation about higher education funding and Ferris State University.

In addition to the state and national outlook, I look forward to sharing with you information on the University budget, net assets, the outlook for future funding and other issues. I also look forward to visiting with you and hearing your questions on these matters of critical concern to our University community and our collective future.

Ferris Jazz Band Concert Nov. 10

The Ferris State University Jazz Band fall concert will take place Thursday, Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. in Williams Auditorium.

The 21-student band will perform big band swing, rock and Latin pieces. The concert is free and open to the public.

"There are very few chances to hear big band jazz in our area. The type of ensemble and repertoire make this show unique to Ferris," said Matt Moresi, director of the Jazz Band. "There are so many diverse interests and activities here at Ferris. This is an opportunity to check out some fun and interesting music."

Moresi hopes students and the local community members attend the concert to support the students performing and connect with the music played.

"It makes me happy when people are singing something they heard as they are walking out," he said.

The Jazz Band has been rehearsing the fall concert twice a week since the beginning of the fall semester and will be presenting their holiday concert on Thursday, Dec. 8.

Student Commentary: Black Student Union Is An Organization On The Rise

If you want to see change you must be a part of change.

Black Student Union is a fairly new Registered Student Organization on Ferris State University campus. This organization has hit the ground running and is eager to make a change in the campus community.

BSU serves as the nucleus of minority organizations on the campus of Ferris and works to bridge the gap between Greek and non-Greek students.

BreAnna Alexander, President of BSU, saw a great need for change within Ferris State University and in the minority community alike.

“Ferris State needs an organization like Black Student Union to help develop leadership skills among the minority community and to learn the true value of scholarship,” said Alexander, Black Student Union President.

Black Student Union’s goal is to encourage scholarship, professionalism, community service, and to increase knowledge of current world wide events.

“BSU will bring new and exciting ways to learn about what is affecting us on a local and national level, said Alexander, I believe at times it is hard for the average student to read the newspaper front to back or watch CNN for numerous hours so BSU hopes to be able to make this process more exciting.”

Black Student Union has held two events so far this semester. In collaboration with Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity Incorporated, BSU held a successful Breast Cancer Walk during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. More recently Black Student Union held a Tweetcaster Discussion event called “What’s Happening Now?” to address current topics that effect our community.

“The purpose of our events is to educate each student that attends. Whether the event is focusing on politics, current events, or issues on the campus, there will be an educational outcome,” said Alexander.

BSU is holding firmly to seeing change amongst Ferris students and within the community.

Look forward to BSU’s open forum discussion within the next few weeks regarding the state of the minority students. This event is free and open to the public.

Fall Grad Fair

Are you ready to graduate?

The Ferris State University Fall Grad Fair will take place Thursday, Nov. 10 from 12 to 4 p.m. in the Rankin Student Center.

Students can purchase their cap and gown and can pick up tickets for commencement in the Lower Atrium, located outside of the bookstore. Students are able to participate in festivities such as:

Ordering graduation announcements, class rings, business cards, digital frames and other graduation gifts
Creating a video message for friends and family to be displayed prior to the ceremony
Having Career Services critique your resume
Having a free digital photo taken in cap and gown with friends
A chance to win door prizes, which will be given out every hour

Students will also be able to check out graduate degree programs offered at FSU, receive information on renter's insurance and receive benefit information from the Alumni Association.

The Carlos Hardy Show

Join Ferris State University for some laughs on campus as students will be performing in The Carlos Hardy Show Thursday, Nov. 3.

The show will be held in the Rankin Student Center Dome Room from 7 to 9 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Andre Keys, the Black Leaders Aspiring For Critical Knowledge Community Relations Representative hopes students attend in order to “get away from homework” and see the silly side of people on campus. He said students will be imitating their favorite singers, actors or rappers in a comical way.

“I feel like it is a great show. People need laughter. Laughter is what keeps people healthy,” Keys said.

The show was originally created by Carlos Hardy, a Ferris graduate, who was one of the founders for the student organization B.L.A.C.K.

Student Commentary: Obama's Plan for Student Loan Debt Relief

Student loans and student debt are big issues among those who attend universities and colleges.

In 2010, President Obama established a plan, which was approved by Congress, to reduce loan borrowers’ monthly payment from 15 to 10 percent of their discretionary income as of 2014, according to CBS News. Additionally, the plan stated that the balance of the borrower’s debt would be forgiven after 20 years of payment instead of 25 years.

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, President Obama made an executive order that would make those benefits available to student loan borrowers as early as 2012.

This plan will allow recent graduates to consolidate their loans and receive lower interest rates. A program will also be developed to help students increase their knowledge of available options prior to taking out loans.

Kick Start Your Dreams with James Smith Moore, CEO of Jimmy Kicks

Ferris State University’s Victory 4U Campus Ministries will be hosting James Smith Moore, 22-year-old CEO and founder of Jimmy Kicks, Nov. 4 in IRC 20 to share his message of how to “Kick Start Your Dreams.”

The young entrepreneur’s presentation will begin at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. He will discuss how to turn a plan into profit.

"James is so unique, because he is in a position so many want to be in. He is a true, living example of what it means to activate and launch into your destiny,” Jessica Robinson, president of Victory 4U said. “I hope they [attendees] get the motivation and the courage to consider not just being an employee but an employer."

Moore, of Detroit, will discuss his story of going after his dreams and being successful. Jamie Burkle, an executive board member of Victory 4U, hopes those who attend gain a new perspective of how to make their dreams a reality.

“Great things can happen for anyone willing to take a step out on faith and James is a perfect example of this,” Burkle said. “We are excited and full of great expectation.”

For the first time in Ferris State University history a Lip Dub video will be filmed during the spring 2012 semester.

The Office of International Education will be putting on this event and is open to all student organizations willing to participate. Any student groups who want to become involved should begin brainstorming ways to showcase their organization in the filming of the video late next spring.

“The purpose of the video is to show the diversity of Ferris, the presence of international students and showcase the mini aspects of the campus. We really like to have as much student involvement as we can to showcase what their organization is about,” Tara Braun, Ferris Study Abroad manager said.

The exact date of the filming is not determined yet, but those interested should look for more information in early January.

The Importance Of Being Involved On Campus: From A Student’s Point of view

Getting involved on campus is a completely different experience than just being involved in the classroom. Don’t get me wrong, classroom knowledge is the core to your college career but campus involvement will send your knowledge and experience level over the top.

I once read a quote that says, “Knowledge without know how is not enough.”

This quote holds its truths. The classes you take give you the knowledge you need, but being involved gives you the knowledge of knowing how to do it. Use what you learn in class and prefect it through allowing yourself to gain personal and professional experience.

Being involved with a Registered Student Organization can open your eyes to a world of opportunity within itself.

For example, I’ll share my experience of being a member of Student Government at Ferris State University.

I began my journey on Student Government during my sophomore year of college. Since then I have sat on many committees such a Diversity, Internal Assessment and Academic Senate.
Through I gained skills from those committees those are not the ones that really stood out to me.
It was when I became the Readership Program Chair, Social Media Specialist for Student Government and joined the Public Relations committee that caught my true interest.

I say “my true interest” because all of these things allowed me to do what I love best, and practice the skills the Journalism and Technical Communication program has taught me.

I am able to use my classroom experience and apply it to my organization, which is a plus for me and my organization.

This is why I believe getting involved on campus enhances your overall college experience. I encourage ALL students to find a RSO that interest them, either social or professional, to gain out of the classroom experience that can boost your knowledge of your craft.

I also encourage all students to attend a Student Government meeting to see what your student leaders are doing to better the campus. Student Government meets every Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Rankin 252. We hope to see you there!

A Big Weekend Is Coming Up In Bulldog Athletics

If you're looking for something to do this weekend, Ferris State University has got you covered with some great sports action.

The volleyball team is home for matches on Saturday and Sunday against Michigan Tech University and Northern Michigan University, respectively. Saturday's match against the Huskies begins at 2 p.m. while Sunday's contest with the Wildcats commences at 2 p.m. as well. Both matches will be played in Ewigleben Sports Arena.

Also on Saturday, the ice hockey team is home for game two of its series with Miami University with faceoff set for 7:05 p.m. from Ewigleben Ice Arena.

On Sunday, the women's soccer team is in action in Big Rapids as it hosts Tiffin University with start time scheduled for 12 p.m.

Five Reasons to Remain on Campus this Weekend at Ferris

Thinking about leaving Ferris State University's campus this weekend to do something else?

Consider the following...

1. A women's soccer match against Northern Michigan University today at 4 p.m. where free lunches at Snyders Market are being given away at at halftime.

2. The women's volleyball team, off to a 6-1 start this season, is at home against Lake Superior State University on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. You can win free golf packages in between sets two and three.

3. There will be a special football tailgate party on Saturday at 4 p.m. prior to the game at 7 p.m. at Top Taggart Field. There will be free 2011 Tailgate Team Koozies given to the first 100 students. "Minute It to Win It" contests throughout the game.

4. The action continues on Sunday with a women's soccer match against Michigan Tech University beginning at noon. Fans can win Bulldog T-shirts at halftime.

5. There is women's volleyball action against Northwood University on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Ferris Hosts Professional Career and Leadership Conference For

Registration for the Professional Career and Leadership Conference at Ferris State University is now OPEN to ALL university employees and students and is filling up fast.

The offices of Career Services and Student Leadership and Activities are sponsoring the Professional Career and Leadership Conference on Wednesday, Sept. 28. The conference objectives are for participants to:

• Discover the impact of leadership on workplace success

• Develop skills necessary to become a successful leader on and off campus

• Develop employability skills and tools needed for career preparation

• Navigate and make connections with a diverse group of participants at a conference style event

The conference is open to all students, faculty, and staff members and participants will receive a certificate of completion for attending all sessions. To attend the etiquette dinner, participants must attend two concurrent sessions.

Tickets Available For Bulldog Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet

Tickets are now on sale for the Class of 2011 Induction Banquet of Ferris State University's Bulldog Athletics Hall of Fame set for Friday, Sept. 30, at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Center in Big Rapids.

Tickets for the induction ceremony are $50 each or a table of 10 for $450. All tickets must be purchased in advance by Sept. 27 and can be obtained by contacting the FSU Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888 or by visiting the box office inside the Ewigleben Sports Complex during normal business hours Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours until 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Tickets will not be sold on the night of the event.

From the Desk of the President: Remembering 9/11

Here is another note from the desk of Ferris State University President David L. Eisler in reference to this 10-year anniversary of the attacks that shook the campus, the state of Michigan, the nation and the world on Sept. 11, 2001:

No one anticipated the tragedies of Sept. 11 – the hijacked commercial airline flights that crashed into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and into the earth near Shanksville, Penn. What began as an ordinary day changed our lives forever as we watched in horror when the twin towers collapsed, killing more than 2,600 people. It has been ten years. Sadly, the reality is public tragedies too often become the touchstones of our shared experience. Perhaps, like me, you remember exactly where you were when John F. Kennedy was assassinated, when Martin Luther King was gunned down, or when the Challenger exploded.

That day and the days that followed are filled with indelible memories - of firefighters rushing into the World Trade Towers while others fled from danger; of reports of passengers fighting back against hijackers on Flight 93; of sitting with loved ones and family members in front of the television watching for the latest reports. The deaths of the nearly 3,000 people who perished that day affected nearly all of us – not just as individuals, but as members of communities, including universities, which lost fellow citizens, compatriots, students, faculty and alumni. Perhaps, like me, you spent time reading their elegies and wondering what they might yet have accomplished had they lived. Unlike our most recent experiences of war – including two world wars and conflicts in Korea and Vietnam – this time the violence had come to our shores and killed thousands of innocent men, women and children.

In the aftermath, here at Ferris and on other college campuses across the country, there were candlelight vigils and an outpouring of patriotism unlike anything we had witnessed in decades. It was at this time that the American Democracy Project was created, to help channel this energy into preparing the next generation of informed, engaged citizens for our country. At Ferris we are fortunate to be a member of this project, helping to educate graduates committed to being actively involved citizens in their communities.

Over this weekend I encourage you take a few moments to think back to the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and to remember not only those who perished that day, but the many men and women since then who have given their lives in the fight against terrorism. It is a good time for each of us to consider how we, in our own way, can help make the world a better place.

Ferris To Host Services Learning Informational Lunch

The College of Arts and Sciences at Ferris State University is hosting its Academic Services Learning Informational Lunch on Monday, Sept. 12.

This event will be held in the Arts and Science Commons Room 2082 at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Services Learning Informational lunch is free to all. Its purpose is to provide students with valuable information about Academic Services Learning and explain how it can help with funds for classroom projects.

Students are welcomed to stop by anytime during the timeframe of the informational lunch.

Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction

Ferris State University Society of Automotive Engineers will host a spaghetti dinner and silent auction Sept. 8. to raise funds for their Baja Division.

The dinner will begin at 4:30 p.m and last until 7:30 p.m. The cost will be $8 per person. If guests bring a non-perishable item, they will be offered a $1 discount per person.

Those who attend the event at the West Campus Community Center will be able to participate in the silent auction, 50/50 drawings and enter for door prizes.

All profits will go towards the Baja Division of SAE in order to build their dream go-cart to compete with throughout the year.

Society of Automotive Engineers Car Wash

The Society of Automotive Engineers at Ferris State University will be making a splash at their fundraising car wash Sept. 10.

The car wash will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Advance Auto, 712 Perry Ave., Big Rapids.

Donations will be accepted and proceeds will go towards the SAE general fund. This fund pays for welding gas and other needed materials for SAE.

Welcome Back Picnic for College of Engineering Technology Students

A welcome back picnic is in store for College of Engineering Technology students at Ferris State University Sept. 13.

The free picnic will be held at the west side of the Swan parking lot. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. and last until 8:30 p.m. CET students are invited to bring a guest to share an evening of music, food and beverages and a lot of fun!

Those CET students who attend will be eligible to win financial awards and other prizes.

Today, on the Campus Quad and in the shadow of the statue of founder Woodbridge N. Ferris, Ferris State University will celebrate Founders' Day in recognition of Woodbridge and Helen Gillespie Ferris.

There are no shortage of activities taking place on the campus today as the university pays tributes to two influential and important people in its history.

From the President's Desk: A Helping Hand To New And Returning Students Moving Back To Campus

Here is another note from the desk of Ferris State University president David L. Eisler in reference to the way so many people on campus pitched in to ease the transition of our new and returning students to campus for the start of the new semester at Ferris:

In addition to this official helping hand, students new to campus will be asking many questions throughout the first few days of the semester. Please take a few moments to make sure they get the assistance needed to make their transition to our University as trouble-free as possible. This extra help can make an impression on them that will last years. I can think of no other time when working together is as important as this. Hopefully, our new students will become lifetime members of the Ferris community. Thank you for helping to make their welcome an extraordinarily positive experience for them.

With students back on campus, fall semester is off to a truly energetic start. Although this happens each year, one can forget the way our campus is transformed when students return. It is easy to feel the excitement that accompanies the start of classes in the fall. While I enjoy talking to all of our students, I am always particularly interested in getting to know those just starting their college careers. They bring with them a special sense of potential and anticipation that goes to the very heart of our mission to provide opportunity. I also enjoy talking with their parents, hearing their hopes and expectations for their children, and their growing realization that college is a significant change in both their and their students’ lives.

Even as we welcome students settling into our residence halls, we have large numbers of older students new to their studies or returning from a hiatus from the classroom. Increasingly we are welcoming students who are several years out of high school looking to learn new skills, or sharpen the skills they have learned on the job.I want to thank everyone in Big Rapids who took the time to help new students by volunteering at our First Impressions booths and tables. When you are new to campus, it makes such a difference to have someone who can answer your questions and help you.

Many, many people volunteer for First Impressions. If you have volunteered this year or in the past, you know what an opportunity it provides to meet our new students and their families.
